NJ YAG is ideal for civic-minded students interested in government, law, leadership, or advocacy—and for any teen eager to make a difference and better understand how democracy works in action.

New Jersey Youth and Government (NJ YAG) is a statewide civic engagement program that empowers high school students to explore democracy by actively participating in a simulated state government. Modeled after the New Jersey legislative and judicial systems, NJ YAG gives students a meaningful voice to debate current issues, research public policy, and propose mock legislation that reflects the needs and concerns of their communities.

The Hopewell Valley YMCA invites students in grades 9–12 to step into roles such as senators, assembly members, justices, lawyers, and lobbyists to review policies, governmental procedures and stretch their growth in the governmental ring. Delegates collaborate with peers from across the state through the YMCA’s national Youth and Government model, gaining firsthand experience in how laws are created, debated, and enacted.

Throughout the year, participants develop essential life skills including public speaking, critical thinking, research, writing, negotiation, and teamwork. Guided by the YMCA’s core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility, NJ YAG fosters thoughtful debate, leadership development, and lasting friendships in a safe and supportive environment.

The program involves weekly meetings, a 1 day mid session summit, and culminates in the YMCA New Jersey Youth and Government State Conference, a three-day immersive experience that includes a pre-legislative session and a full mock legislative assembly.
