Certifications and Training

Senior AARP Smart Driver Course

The Hopewell Valley YMCA will be hosting the AARP Smart Driver course. The AARP Driver Safety Program is the nation’s first and largest classroom refresher course designed especially for drivers 50 and older. Participants learn defensive techniques, new traffic laws, and rules of the road. Through interacting with one another, they find out how to safely adjust their driving to compensate for age-related changes in vision, hearing, and reaction time. Graduates receive a certificate of completion that entitles them to a reduction in their auto insurance premiums in NJ. Participants must attend both days to complete course. AARP & YMCA membership is not required. Open to drivers of all ages.

With the help of gracious hosts like us, the Hopewell Valley Township has been able to offer safe driving education to more than 18 million people in our 40 years of service.  We would like to inform you that beginning July 1, 2020, we will be increasing the price of the AARP Smart Driver classroom course to $20 for AARP members and $25 for non-members.

AARP Smart Driver course Current Classroom Price Classroom Price after 7/1/2020
AARP Member $15 $20
Non-Member $20 $25

The reason for the July 1, 2020 date is to give our volunteers and Host locations ample time to help prepare for this, including replacing promotional materials, or updating any printed publications, signage, web pages or other advertisements.  If you have any questions, please contact KyleRakow@aarp.org.  Everyone benefits when our roads are safer. In addition, participants of the course may qualify for a discount on their auto insurance, which is an appreciated savings opportunity.
